Fortress Ston is a resort town located where Peljesac peninsula is connected to the mainland. Ston was founded in 1333.

The construction of the Ston wall began in 1334 for the purpose of defending the Republic of Dubrovnik. Today, you can walk on the walls and see several towers and fortresses. The walls of Ston are the longest defensive complex in Europe and the second longest in the world, after the Great Wall of China. Also, the Franciscan monastery of St. Nicholas — one of the largest in Croatia.

The age of the Solana of Ston is 4000 years. Salt has been an economically important resource in all ages.

The Solana in Ston has the area of 500,000 sq.km, and 430,000 of them are pools with seawater. There are 58 pools and 5 groups altogether. During high tide, seawater fills the pools of the first group, the salinity of the water is 3.5%, the water is gradually let go from pool to pool until its salitity is 2.4% This process lasts 1.5 to 2 months depending on weather conditions. After that, the water flows to crystallization pools. In them, the salt crystallizes and in 10-15 days salt collection begins. One pools is processed in one day. 30-100 tons of salt is collected from each pool, and all the work is done by hand.
